Rounded Zipper Pouch PDF Pattern Plus Tutorial

This little zipper pouch is so cute! The extra pouch on the outside is a nice addition as it comes in handy when you want to reach something quickly. I like to use it as a pencil pouch. I put little notes I write when designing quilts, some pens, and a quilting calculator in it also. I love the feel the quilt batting gives it; it's just stiff enough with the quilting, yet it is also soft when you hold it.

Download the PDF template here:

Using the template cut:

  • Outer fabric: Cut 2 pieces
  • Lining fabric: Cut 2 pieces
Fold down the top of the template along the fold line.
  • Cut 1 piece for the outside of the pocket
  • Cut 1 piece from the lining for the inside of the pocket.

Other materials:

  • 1 - 2" x 10" strip of fabric, this will be the top of the outer pocket
  • 1 - 5 1/2" strip of 1/2" hook and loop tape (velcro). I just buy 1" hook and loop tape and cut it in half as needed.
  • 1 - 7" zipper
  • 3 - 10" squares of quilt batting, this is a great time to use up some batting scraps!

Layer the outer fabric and outer pocket pieces on the quilt batting squares.

Quilt as desired! More quilting makes it stiffer.

Use the template to mark where to put the hook and loop tape on one of the outer fabric pieces and the pocket lining piece. Sew on the hook and loop tape.

Lay the quilted pocket piece on the pocket lining piece, wrong sides together.

Iron your binding piece in half, wrong sides together.

Center the binding piece on the pocket pieces, aligning the raw edges.

Sew to the top using 1/4" seam allowance.

Fold over to the other side sew down. You can use a straight, decorative, or zigzag stitch, or even hand sew the binding down. It depends on your preferred binding method and the look you want your zipper pouch to have! I used a decorative stitch.

Lay the 7" zipper on an outer fabric piece right sides together. Sew onto the outer fabric piece.

Repeat this for the other outer fabric piece and the opposite side of the zipper.

This is what you should have when you lay out the pieces.
 Flip over your pieces.

Lay a lining piece right sides together on one end of the zipper.

Sew on, the fold back the lining. I used a thin lining fabric so you could see the seam underneath.

Repeat this for the other lining piece.

Put the pocket onto the outside of the pouch by sticking together the hook and loop tape.

Important: Unzip the zipper 3/4 of the way. If you don't do this, you can't turn your zipper pouch! Put the outer pieces right sides together and the lining pieces right sides together. Pin together.

When you pin everything together, make sure you place the zipper teeth against the lining.

Sew around using a 1/2" seam allowance. Leave a 3" opening at the bottom of the lining.

Trim around the curves of the seam allowance.

Pull the outside of the pouch out through the opening in the lining.

Press together the lining opening and sew shut.

Put the lining down into the pouch, and you are done!
