Free Downloadable PDF Pattern: Color Spin

This fun and simple pattern is super easy to piece together! The quarter square triangles and the center pinwheel add a fun twist of color, while the checkered border frames the quit nicely. The PDF pattern includes instructions for a 20.5" square table topper and a 40.5" square baby quilt.

Only 5 different fabrics are used in the pattern. I used dark blue, light blue, dark pink, pale pink, and a brightly contrasting green. I like the pinwheel to really pop, so I thought the bright green would be perfect for it. A fast strip piecing method is used to make the squares for the checkered border.

Instructions are written to make the half square triangles (HST) and quarter square triangles (QST) with varying amounts of room for trimming. For the most accurate HSTs and QSTs I like to add 7/8" to the unfinished square size, while HSTs are typically calculated by adding 7/8" to the finished size. This little extra bit of fabric on every square makes sewing together HSTs and QSTs MUCH easier. They end up nice and square every time! I love seeing perfectly aligned pinwheels. Mastering piecing together pinwheels can be challenging, so when you do get them right it feels great!

This table topper would look great in solid fabrics, too. You could use black, white, gray paired with light and dark shades of another color for a more modern look. I quilted it with simple straight line quilting. I thought that meandering or cross hatching would take too much away from the pattern.

  1. What an adorable pattern, and I love those fabrics! I like to add extra to my HSTs as well. I prefer having extra room to trim a perfect HST, rather than fudge a wonky one into a seam.
