Scrap Quilt 2016-2017: Block #17


Cutting Instructions

Color Fabric
  • 14 - 3 3/8" squares
  • 8 - 2 1/2" squares

White Fabric
  • 14 - 3 3/8" squares
  • 8 - 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips
  • 12 - 2 1/2" squares
  • 1 - 6 1/2" square

*Note: Always press to the color fabric unless otherwise noted.

**Note: Half squares triangles (HST) allow plenty of room for trimming. To make HSTs with some trimming space, reduce square size by 1/4". To make HSTs without trimming space, reduce square size by 1/2".

Assembly

Step 1. Make the half square triangles (HST). Using the 3 3/8" squares, make a total of 24 HSTs. Lay a white 3 3/8" square on a color fabric 3 3/8" square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" from both sides of the line.



Trim along the line.


Press open and trim to measure 2 1/2" square.


Make 26 more HSTs for a total of 28.


Step 2. Referring to the next 3 photos, use 5 HSTs and 1 - 2 1/2" white fabric square to make the block shown. Repeat to make a total of 4 blocks. Pressing: Press to the dark fabric and away from the white fabric square.

Step 3. Referring to the next 3 photos, use 1 HST, 1 - 2 1/2" color fabric square, and 2 - 2 1/2" white fabric squares to make the block shown. Repeat to make a total of 4 blocks. Pressing: Press to the HST and the color fabric square.




Step 4. Make the center of the quilt block. Sew together the 6 1/2" white fabric square and the previously constructed pieces according to the next 4 photos. Pressing: Press away from the 6 1/2" square.





Step 5. Referring to the next 2 photos, sew the borders onto the block. Sew together 2 - 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips and 1 HST per side border. Sew together 2 - 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips, 2 - 2 1/2" color fabric squares, and 1 HST per top and bottom border. Pressing: Press to the dark fabric and to the center quilt block.
