Cutting Instructions

Color Fabric
  • 22 - 2" squares
  • 4 - 4 3/8" squares
  • 8 - 3 1/2" squares

White Fabric
  • 2 - 2" x 14" strips
  • 1 - 2" x 12 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 2" x 15 1/2" strip
  • 4 - 4 3/8" squares
  • 22 - 2" squares
*Note: Always press to the color fabric unless otherwise noted.

**Note: Half squares triangles (HST) allow plenty of room for trimming. To make HSTs with some trimming space, reduce square size by 1/4". To make HSTs without trimming space, reduce square size by 1/2".

Step 1: Make the half square triangles (HST). Use the 4 3/8" squares. Lay a white 4 3/8" square on a color fabric 4 3/8" square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" from both sides of the line.

Cut along the line, then press open and trim to measure 3 1/2" square. Make a total of 8 HSTs.

Step 2: Make the four patch block. Referring to the next 3 photos, sew together 4 of the 3 1/2" color fabric squares.

Step 3: Assemble the center star. Sew together the HSTs, the four patch block, and the remaining 3 1/2" squares. Press to the four patch block and the 3 1/2" squares.

Step 4: Referring to the next 4 photos, sew the white fabric strips onto the star block. Begin with the 12 1/2" strip, then sew on the 14" strips, and end with the 15 1/2" strip.

Step 5: Sew together the 2" squares to make 4 strips. 2 of the strips should each use 12 squares and measure 18 1/2" long, while the other 2 strips should each use 10 squares and measure 15 1/2" long.

Step 6: Referring to the last 2 photos, sew the fabric square strips onto the sides of the quilt block. Begin by sewing the shorter strips onto the sides first.
