Scrap Quilt Block #3

Another scrap quilt block done! This one has a bold red fabric in it that I was at first scared to use. I am glad that I did! I think it will help the quilt to look scrappy and random to have some bold, more solid fabrics. This quilt is actually harder than I thought it would be. It's hard to keep from coordinating the fabrics on each block. I have to try and pick colors that seem to clash in order to keep the scrap quilt theme. What I do love is getting to make all these different blocks. I pick out random quilt blocks that I can easily make to have a finished size of 9", then alter some of the squares to be made out of smaller pieces. An example would be the corner squares on this block. They were supposed to be solid white squares, but I had these little white rectangle scraps that I wanted to use up, so I sewed them to some other rectangles to make the squares.

For the center square you need:

1 2.5" square
2 1.75" squares cut into 4 triangles

For the quarter square triangles (QST):

1 red fabric 4.5" square
1 white fabric 4.5" square

Sew these together to make 2 4" HST.

1 red fabric 4.5" square
1 yellow fabric 4.5" square

Sew together to make 2 more 4" HST.

Sew together the HST to make 4 QST.

For the corner squares:

4 white 3.5" x 2" rectangles
4 teal 3.5" x 2" rectangles

46 more blocks to go!
