Scrap Block #9

Most of my blocks so far have been variations of 16 and 9 patch blocks. I am very glad I decided to make a scrappy log cabin block! A new block type adds to the scrappy look of the quilt, and it was fun to try something different.

What you need:

White/light fabric:

1-1 1/2" square
1-2 1/2" x 1 1/2"
1-3 1/2 x 1 1/2"
1-4 1/2" x 1 1/2"
1-5 1/2" x 1 1/2"
1-6 1/2" x 1 1/2"
1-7 1/2" x 1 1/2"
1-8 1/2" x 1 1/2"

Dark fabric:

1-1 1/2" square (This square will be the center)
1-2 1/2" x 1 1/2"
1-3 1/2 x 1 1/2"
1-4 1/2" x 1 1/2"
1-5 1/2" x 1 1/2"
1-6 1/2" x 1 1/2"
1-7 1/2" x 1 1/2"
1-8 1/2" x 1 1/2"

1-9 1/2" x 1/12"

Sew the light fabric 1 1/2" square on top of the dark fabric 1 1/2" square.

Sew the 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" light fabric piece to the right of the first two squares. Sew the dark 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" piece to the bottom of these pieces.

Sew the dark 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" dark fabric piece to the left of the other pieces. This ends the cycle of sewing pieces to different sides of the block and your piece should be square. Since you start by sewing the light fabric square to the top of the dark square, the pattern is: Top, right, bottom, left.

To the top of these pieces, sew the 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" light fabric piece.

Continue sewing pieces in this pattern, sewing the light pieces to the top and right, while the dark pieces get sewn to the bottom and left. The length of each piece increases by 1" on the left and right sides. End by sewing on the 9 1/2" long dark fabric strip to the left.
