Ladybug Quilt Block Tutorial

This block is adorable! It's also easy to piece together. The pattern makes a ladybug block with borders that has a finished size of 9", or a large ladybug without borders that has a finished size of 11". Without borders, the little ladybug block has a finished size of 5 1/2".

Cutting instructions:

Blue fabric:

  • 1 - 2" x 6" rectangle

  • 1 - 1" x 4 1/2" strip

  • 2 - 1 3/4" squares

Red fabric:

  • 2 - 3" x 4 1/2" rectangles

White fabric;

  • 2 - 1 3/4" squares

  • 2 - 2" squares

Borders:

  • 2 - 2 1/4" x 6" strips

  • 2 - 2 1/4" x 9 1/2" strips

For the ll" block:

Blue fabric:

  • 1 - 6 1/2" x 11 1/2" rectangle

  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" strip

  • 2 - 3" squares

Red fabric:

  • 2 - 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangles

White fabric:

  • 2 - 3" squares

  • 2 - 3 1/2" squares

Pieces for the 9" block.

Lay the small white fabric squares (For small block: 1 3/4" sq. For large: 3" sq) on the each of the red rectangles right sides together. Line them up on the bottom outer corners of each rectangle. Mark a line across the squares, then sew along the line.

Trim excess fabric, then press back the triangles. Repeat this for the inner bottom corners using the blue squares of the same size.

Sew your two ladybug pieces to the blue fabric strip.

Sew the remaining white fabric squares to the sides of the blue rectangle using the same method as for the small white and blue squares to the red rectangle.

Sew this piece onto the ladybug body.

Your ladybug block is done! Sew on the optional borders if you want.

Sew several pinwheels onto your ladybug blocks and make an adorable quilt!
