Quilt Block Tutorial: Ohio Star Block


This easy classic block comes together quickly! It is the third block featured on my Cube Pincushion.

Cutting Instructions:

6" Block

Color fabric:
  • 1 - 2 1/2" square
  • 1 - 4" square
  • 2 - 3 3/8" square
White fabric:
  • 4 - 2 1/2" squares
  • 1 - 4" square
9" Block

Color fabric:
  • 1 - 3 1/2" square
  • 1 - 5" square
  • 2 - 4 3/8" square
White fabric:
  • 4 - 3 1/2" squares
  • 1 - 5" square
    12" Block

    Color fabric:
    • 1 - 4 1/2" square
    • 1 - 6" square
    • 2 - 5 3/8" square
    White fabric:
    • 4 - 4 1/2" squares
    • 1 - 6" square
      18" Block

      Color fabric:
      • 1 - 6 1/2" square
      • 1 - 8" square
      • 2 - 7 3/8" square
      White fabric:
      • 4 - 6 1/2" squares
      • 1 - 8" square
      *Note: Half squares triangles (HST) allow plenty of room for trimming. To make HSTs with some trimming space, reduce square size by 1/4". To make HSTs without trimming space, reduce square size by 1/2". 

      Pressing: Always press to the dark fabric unless otherwise noted.

      Assembly Instructions

      Step 1: Make the HSTs. Lay the large color fabric square on top of the large white fabric square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line. Refer to the next 3 photos.




      Cut along the line. Press open and trim to the proper size for your desired block size. See next two photos.

      6" block - trim to measure 2 1/2" square

      9" block - trim to measure 3 1/2" square

      12" block - trim to measure 4 1/2" square

      18" block - trim to measure 6 1/2" square



      Step 2: Make the star points. Lay a HST on one of the larger of the remaining color fabric squares right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares perpendicular to the seam of the HST. Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line. Refer to the next 4 photos.




      Cut along the line, them press open and trim to measure the proper size for your desired block size. See the next two photos.

      Repeat this to make a total of 4 star points.

      6" block - trim to measure 2 1/2" square

      9" block - trim to measure 3 1/2" square

      12" block - trim to measure 4 1/2" square

      18" block - trim to measure 6 1/2" square



      Step 3: Assemble the block. Sew together the 4 star points, remaining color fabric square, and the remaining 4 white fabric squares. Press to the star points.
