This fast to piece quilt block is so simple and you can sew it together in minutes! I featured it on my Cube Pincushion post. Whether you use solid fabrics or patterns, the checkered pattern is sure to be eye catching. The single block uses a strip piecing method like in my Falling Blocks Baby Quilt. The pieces can be lengthened to make more blocks at once without having to cut apart tiny squares. Plus, it saves some thread since you don't have to keep feeding little squares through the sewing machine. Even if you chain piece your blocks (continue sewing separate blocks together without clipping the sewing machine threads.), it still uses a little more thread than if you sewed down one long strip of fabric.
Wherever you use this block, the simple checkered pattern looks great.
Cutting Instructions
6" Block
Color fabric:
- 2 - 2" x 8" strips
White fabric:
- 2 - 2" x 8" strips
9" Block
Color fabric:
- 2 - 2 3/4" x 11" strips
White fabric:
- 2 - 2 3/4" x 11" strips
12" Block
Color fabric:
- 2 - 3 1/2" x 14" strips
White fabric:
- 2 - 3 1/2" x 14" strips
18" Block
Color fabric:
- 2 - 5" x 20" strips
White fabric:
- 2 - 5" x 20" strips
Assembly Instructions
Step 1: Referring to the next photos, sew together the fabric strips. Alternate the fabric colors.
Pressing: Press to the dark fabric unless otherwise noted.

Step 2: Cut apart the strips into 2" wide segments. Cut 4 segments.
Step 3: Sew together the segments according to the next photos.
