Cutting Instructions
White fabric
- 5 - 2 1/2" squares
- 4 - 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles
- 2 - 7 3/8" squares
Color fabric
- 16 - 2 1/2" squares
- 2 - 7 3/8" squares: You can piece these squares together from smaller scraps. Randomly sew together pieces to make large squares, then trim them down to measure an even 7 3/8" on all sides.
*Note: Always press to the color fabric unless otherwise noted.
**Note: Half squares triangles (HST) allow plenty of room for trimming. To make HSTs with some trimming space, reduce square size by 1/4". To make HSTs without trimming space, reduce square size by 1/2".
Step 1: Make the HSTs. Lay a 7 3/8" white fabric square on a 7 3/8" color fabric square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line. Refer to the next 3 photos.
Cut along the line, then press open and trim to measure 6 1/2" square. Repeat this with the remaining pair of 7 3/8" squares to make a total of 4 HSTs. See the next 3 photos.
Step 2: Make the nine patch block. Referring to the next 4 photos, sew together 4 - 2 1/2" color fabric squares and 5 - 2 1/2" white fabric squares.
Step 3: Make the center block borders. Sew together 3 - 2 1/2" color fabric squares to make each border. Make a total of 4 borders. See next 3 photos.
Step 4: Sew the border pieces onto the 4 - 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles. See the next 2 photos. This makes 4 different pieces that all should measure 6 1/2" square.
Step 5: Assemble the block. Sew together the HSTs, 6 1/2" border piece squares, and the nine patch block. Refer to the next 3 photos. Press to the HSTs.
Very clever block. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a fun block. I'm going to do it.
