This easy scrap block is designed to use up leftover 3 1/2" squares and thin fabric strips from past projects. Adding the fabric strips into the middle and trimming the squares on the outer edge gives the block a unique look.
Cutting Instructions
Color Fabric
- 27 - 3 1/2" squares
- 2 - 1 1/2" x 9 1/2" strips
- 1 - 1 1/2" x 19 1/2" strip
White Fabric
- 9 - 3 1/2" squares
*Note: Always press to the color fabric unless otherwise noted.
Assembly
Step 1: Make the nine patch blocks. Using the sewing method shown in the next 3 photos, sew together the 3 1/2" squares to make 4 separate nine patch blocks, 9 squares per block. Pressing: On the top and bottom rows of squares, press towards the outer squares. On the center row, press to the center square.
Refer to the fourth photo for fabric square distribution.
Nine patch #1 (top left): 8 color fabric squares, 1 white fabric square.
Nine patch #2 (top right): 3 color fabric squares, 6 white fabric squares.
Nine patch #3 (bottom left): 9 color fabric squares.
Nine patch #4 (bottom right): 7 color fabric squares, 2 white fabric squares.
Step 2: Referring to the next 2 photos, sew the 1 1/2" x 9 1/2" strips onto the blocks. Press to the fabric strips.
Step 3: Sew the final fabric strip onto the blocks. Press to the fabric strip. At this point, the block will measure 19 1/2" x 19 1/2".
Step 4: Trim off 1/2" all around the block so that it measures 18 1/2" x 18 1/2".
