No Waste Flying Geese Tutorial and Formula

I don't like to waste fabric, which is probably why I have a bag of scraps the weighs almost 10 pounds. I am trying to use those scraps up in my scrap quilt, but it's hard to keep from buying more fabric and making more quilts before the scrap one is finished!
I will try to use the most efficient method of piecing for all of my quilts. Not just the fastest, but the way that uses the least fabric. This no waste method of making flying geese blocks looks confusing at first, but makes a lot of sense in the end, and it saves fabric!

Pieces to cut:

Cut one large square that measures the desired finished width of flying geese block + 1 1/4”.
Example: Desired finished width of 6”, cut large square to measure 7 1/4” x 7 1/4”.

Cut 4 small squares that measure the desired finished height of flying geese block + 7/8”.
Example: Desired finished height of 3”, cut small squares to measure 3 7/8” x 3 7/8”.

Lay two of the small squares on the large square right sides together. Mark a line across the small squares.

Sew 1/4" away from each side of the line.

Cut along the line.

Press to the small squares.

Lay the remaining two small squares on the large square pieces. Mark a line down each square.

Sew 1/4" away from each side of the line.

Cut along the line.

You now have 4 finished flying geese blocks!

Here is a PDF chart with the formula and instructions:

  1. That's a great method for flying geese. I have far too many scraps and I am never sure what to make with them. Scraps seem to multiply when I am not looking!
