I love how this throw quilt turned out! I bought the blue fabric squares when they were on sale and didn't have a project in mind. After laying them out and looking at the different colors, I decided to make a blue and white checkered quilt. It wasn't until after laying out the blue squares with the white squares that I decided to arrange them to make an ombre pattern. There are 80 squares total, 8 by 10. The finished quilt measures 47" x 56"
I free motion quilted swirls and loops over the squares in white thread. I used teal thread to quilt a serpentine stitch on the edges of the inner blue border. I quilted loops in the white border, and a scallop stitch on the inner edge of the large border. Usually I put 2 or 3 borders on my quilts: a dark thin border to make the center pop, and a large border with a large, colorful print. Sometimes with a pale border in between the others.
I used Quilter's Dream Deluxe Loft Batting for this quilt. I love how it washed up, the quilt is so soft and fluffy! It really shows off the quilting over the center. The swirls over the blue ombre make me think of the ocean. The dark teal/blue border adds to the ocean feel.

I love this! And I'm so bad about borders, I may try your layered trick.
