Cutting Instructions
White fabric
- 28 - 2 1/2" squares
- 4 - 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips
- 4 - 2 3/8" squares
Color fabric
- 32 - 2 1/2" squares
- 4 - 2" squares
- 1 - 3 1/2" square
- 1 - 4 1/4" square
Assembly
*Note: Always press to the color fabric unless otherwise noted.
Step 1: Lay 2 - 2 3/8" white fabric squares on the 4 1/4" color fabric square right sides together according to the next photo. Draw a diagonal line along the squares.
Step 3: Press back the squares.
Step 4: Lay the remaining 2 - 2 3/8" squares on the 4 1/4" color fabric square pieces right sides together. Draw a diagonal line along each of the squares. Refer to next photo.
Step 5: Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the lines, then cut along the lines.
Step 6: Press back the squares. This makes 4 flying geese blocks. The flying geese block method used is a no fabric waste method. To read more about it, check out this post here.
Step 7: Referring to the next 5 photos, assemble the center star. Sew together the 1 - 3 1/2" color fabric square, the 4 - 2" color fabric squares, and the 4 flying geese blocks.
Step 8: Make 4 nine patch blocks. Sew together 5 - 2 1/2" color fabric squares and 4 - 2 1/2" white fabric squares per block. You will use a total of 20 - 2 1/2" color fabric squares and 16 - 2 1/2" white fabric squares. Refer to the next 6 photos.
Step 9: Make 4 blocks that are 2 squares by 3 squares; a total of 6 squares per block. Use 3 - 2 1/2" color fabric squares and 3 - 2 1/2" white fabric squares. Refer to the next 3 photos. You will use a total of 12 - 2 1/2" color fabric squares and 12 - 2 1/2" white fabric squares.
Step 10: Sew a 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" white fabric strip to the long end with 2 color fabric squares of each of the 2 square by 3 square pieces. You will use all of the 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips. See the next 3 photos.
Step 11: Assemble the block. Referring to the next 5 photos, sew together the nine patch blocks, 2 square by 3 square pieces, and the center star. Press to the center star and the nine patch blocks.
Such a pretty block, Abby, and thanks for the great tutorial for flying geese! I was vaguely aware of this technique, but hadn't seen such good instructions before! Whoop whoop!!
