9" Quilt Block Tutorial #1



Cutting Instructions

Red fabric
  • 8 - 2" squares or 1 - 2" x 16" strip

Blue fabric
  • 4 - 2" x 3 1/2" rectangles
  • 2 - 3 3/8" squares

White fabric
  • 8 - 2" squares or 1 - 2" x 16" strip
  • 4 - 2" x 3 1/2" rectangles
  • 2 - 3 3/8" squares
*Note: Half squares triangles (HST) allow plenty of room for trimming. To make HSTs with some trimming space, reduce square size by 1/4". To make HSTs without trimming space, reduce square size by 1/2". 

**Note: Always press to the dark fabric unless otherwise noted.

Step 1: Sew together the 2" x 3 1/2" rectangles to make 4 separate squares, one color fabric rectangle and one white fabric rectangle per square. Refer to the next 4 photos.






Step 2: 

If using 2" squares: Sew together the 2" squares to make 4 separate pieces. Refer to the next 4 photos. Use two color fabric squares and two white fabric squares for each of the 4 pieces.

If using 2" x 16" strips: Sew together the strips using the method shown here to make the 4 squares.





Step 3: Make the HSTs. Lay one white 2 7/8" square on a color 2 7/8" square right sides together. Draw a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line. Cut along the line.




Press open and trim to measure 2" square. Repeat this with another pair of 2 7/8" squares to make a total of 4 HSTs..




Step 4: Make the center pinwheel. Referring to the next 3 photos, sew together the 4 HSTs.




Step 5: Assemble the block. According to the next 3 photos, sew together the previously made pieces. Press to the corner squares and center pinwheel.
