Cutting Instructions

White Fabric
  • 1 - 7 1/4" square
  • 1 - 6 1/4" square
  • 6 - 4 3/8" squares
  • 2 - 1 1/2" x 12 1/2" strips
  • 2 - 1 1/2" x 10 1/2" strips

Color Fabric
  • 4 - 3 7/8" squares
  • 4 - 3 3/8" squares
  • 4 - 3" squares
  • 6 - 4 3/8" squares
  • 16 - 1 3/4" squares

Assembly

*Note: Always press to the color fabric unless otherwise noted.

**Note: Half squares triangles (HST) allow plenty of room for trimming. To make HSTs with some trimming space, reduce square size by 1/4". To make HSTs without trimming space, reduce square size by 1/2".

Step 1: Make the first set of flying geese blocks. Lay 2 - 3 7/8" squares on the 7 1/4" white fabric square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line.

Notice how the two squares overlap in the center. This is supposed to happen.

Cut along the line, then press back the squares.

Lay the remaining 3 7/8" color fabric squares on the two white fabric square pieces right sides together. Mark diagonal lines along the squares, then sew 1/4" away from both sides of each line.

Cut along the lines, then press back the squares.

This is a no waste flying geese block method. You can read more about this method here.

Step 2: Make the smaller set of flying geese blocks. Repeat the above method using the 4 - 3 3/8" color fabric squares and the 6 1/4" white fabric square.

Step 3: Make the half square triangles (HST). Lay a color fabric 4 3/8" square on a white fabric 4 3/8" square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line.

Cut along the line. Press open and trim to measure 3 1/2" square.

Make a total of 12 HSTs.

Step 4: Make the center 16 patch block. Sew together the 16 - 1 3/4" color fabric squares.

Step 5: Assemble the block. Begin with the center star.

Sew together the center 16 patch block, small flying geese blocks, and the 3" color fabric squares. Press to the flying geese blocks.

Sew the 1 1/2" x 10" white fabric strips onto the sides of the star. Press to the star.

Sew the 1 1/2" x 12 1/2" strips onto the top and bottom of the star. Press to the star.

Sew two of the HSTs onto the tops and bottoms of two larger flying geese blocks.

Sew these pieces onto the sides of the star.
