Cutting Instructions
White Fabric
- 20 - 3 3/8" squares
- 36 - 2 1/2" squares
Color Fabric
- 20 - 3 3/8" squares
- 5 - 2 1/2" squares
Assembly
*Note: Always press to the color fabric unless otherwise noted.
**Note: Half squares triangles (HST) allow plenty of room for trimming. To make HSTs with some trimming space, reduce square size by 1/4". To make HSTs without trimming space, reduce square size by 1/2".
Step 1: Make the half square triangles (HST). Lay a white fabric 3 3/8" square on a color fabric 3 3/8" square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line.
Cut along the line, then press open and trim to measure 2 1/2" square.
Step 2: Make the first type of nine patch blocks. Referring to the next 5 photos, sew together 4 - HSTs and 5 - 2 1/2" color fabric squares per each of the 4 blocks. Press to the color fabric squares.
Step 3: Using the same method, sew together 5 - HSTs and 4 - 2 1/2" color fabrics squares to make the second type of nine patch block. Make a total of 4 blocks.
Step 4: Make the center star. Sew together the 5 - 2 1/2" white fabric squares and the remaining HSTs. Press to the HSTs. See the next 4 photos.
Step 5: Assemble the block. Sew together the 8 nine patch blocks and the center star. Press to the nine patch blocks that have a solid square in the center. This would be the center square in the top and bottom rows, and the edge squares on the middle row. Refer to the next 5 photos.
