**Note: Half squares triangles (HST) allow plenty of room for trimming. To make HSTs with some trimming space, reduce square size by 1/4". To make HSTs without trimming space, reduce square size by 1/2".
Step 1. Make the half square triangles (HST). Using the 4 3/8" squares, make a total of 8 HSTs. Lay a white 4 3/8" square on a color fabric 4 3/8" square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" from both sides of the line.
Cut along the line, then press open and trim to measure 3 1/2" square.
Make a total of 8.
Step 2. Make the four patch blocks. Sew together 2 - 3 1/2" color fabric squares and 2 - 3 1/2" white fabric squares per four patch block. Refer to the next 3 photos. Make a total of 4 blocks.
Step 3. Referring to the next 3 photos, sew together 2 HSTs and 1 - 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" white fabric piece. Make 2 of these blocks. Pressing: Press to the dark fabric, then to the HSTs.
Step 4. Using the remaining HSTs and the remaining 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" pieces, make the blocks shown in the next photo. Use the previous sewing method. Sew together 2 HSTs and 1 - 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" white fabric piece per block. Make 2 of these blocks. Pressing: Press to the dark fabric, then to the white fabric pieces.
Step 5. Referring to the next 3 photos, assemble the block. Pressing: Press to the four patch blocks.
