Step 1. Make the half square triangles (HST). Lay a white 4 3/8" square on a color fabric 4 3/8" square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" from both sides of the line.
Cut along the line, then press open and trim to measure 3 1/2" square.
Repeat the previous sewing method with the remaining pair of 4 3/8" squares to make a total of 4 HSTs.
Step 2. Border squares. To make each square, sew together 1 - 2" x 3 1/2" white fabric rectangle and 1 - 2" x 3 1/2" color fabric rectangle. Make a total of 16 squares.
Step 3. Make the center square. Referring to the next 4 photos, sew together 8 - 2 1/2" color fabric squares and 8 - 2 1/2" white fabric squares..
Step 4. Referring to the next 3 photos, sew the 4 - 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips and the remaining 2 1/2" squares onto the center square.
Step 5. Make the borders. Sew together 4 border squares per border.
Step 6. To make the top and bottom borders, sew 2 HSTs onto the sides of 2 of the borders. Pressing: Press away from the HSTs.
