Scrap Quilt 2016-2017: Block #6


Cutting Instructions

White Fabric
  • 16 - 2 3/4" squares
  • 1 - 10 1/4" square
  • 1 - 1 1/2" square
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 7 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" strip
Color Fabric

  • 16 - 2 3/4" squares
  • 4 - 5 3/8" squares
  • 1 - 1 1/2" square
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 7 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" strip
  • 1 - 1 1/2" x 9 1/2" strip
Assembly

*Note: Always press to the color fabric unless otherwise noted.

Step 1: Make the flying geese blocks. Use the 10 1/4" square and the 4 - 5 3/8" squares.


Lay 2 of the 5 3/8" squares on the 10 1/4" square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line.



Cut along the line, then press back the squares.



Lay the remaining 2 - 5 3/8" squares on the white 10 1/4" square pieces right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along each square, then sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line.




Cut along the lines, then press back the squares.



This is a no waste flying geese block method. You can read more about this method here.

Step 2: Make the 9" log cabin block. Use all of the 1 1/2" wide pieces. To begin, sew the 1 1/2" color fabric square to the top of the 1 1/2" white fabric square.



Next, sew the 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip onto the left side of the squares.



To the top of these pieces, sew on the 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip.



To the right of these pieces, add the 1 1/2" x 3 1/2".



Sew the 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" strip onto the bottom of the previously sewn pieces.



Continue sewing pieces on in this clockwise pattern. Add the 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" white strip.



Sew on the 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" color fabric strip.



Sew on the 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" color fabric strip.




Next, the 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" color fabric strip.



Then the 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" white fabric strip.



Sew on the 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" color fabric strip.



The 1 1/2" x 7 1/2" color fabric strip.



The 1 1/2" x 7 1/2" white fabric strip.



The 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" white fabric strip.



The  1 1/2" x 8 1/2" color strip.



Finally, the 1 1/2" x 9 1/2" color fabric strip.



Step 3: Make the 16 patch block. Referring to the next 5 photos, sew together the 8 - 2 3/4" color fabric squares and the 8 - 2 3/4" white fabric squares.






Step 4: Assemble the block. Sew together the flying geese blocks, log cabin block, and 16 patch block. Press to the flying geese blocks.
