Assembly

Step 1: Make the half square triangles (HST). Use the 4 3/8" squares. Lay a white 4 3/8" square on a color fabric 4 3/8" square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" from both sides of the line.

Repeat with the remaining 4 3/8" squares to make a total of 8 HSTs.

Step 2: Sew together the 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips to make 4 separate squares. Refer to the next 3 photos.

Step 3: Make the flying geese blocks for the star points. Use the 1 7/8" color fabric squares and the 3 1/4" white fabric square. Lay 2 of the 1 7/8" color fabric squares on the 3 1/4" white fabric square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line.

Cut along the line and press back the color fabric squares.

Lay the remaining 2 color fabric squares on the white fabric square pieces right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along each of the squares, then sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line.

Cut along the lines, then press back the squares.

This is a no waste flying geese sewing method. You can read more about this sewing method here.

Step 4: Assemble the center star. Sew together the 4 - 1 1/2" white fabric squares, the 2 1/2" white fabric square, and the star points (flying geese blocks). Press towards the star points. Refer to the next 5 photos.

Step 5: Referring to the next 5 photos, sew together the center star, 4 of the HSTs, and the squares made from the 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips to make the center block. Press to the center star and the HSTs.

Step 6: Sew the 1 1/2" x 10 1/2" white fabric strips onto the sides of the center quilt block.

Step 7: Make the sides of the block. Sew together 3 - 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" color fabric pieces and 2 - 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" white fabric pieces per side. Make a total of 2 sides. Sew the sides onto the sides of the center block.

Step 8: Sew the 1 1/2" x 18 1/2" white fabric strips onto the top and bottom of the block.

Step 9: Referring to the next 9 photos, sew together the remaining 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" pieces, the 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" white fabric pieces, and the remaining HSTs to make the top and bottom of the quilt block.
