Petals in the Wind Quilt

I am ready for spring, and this quilt shows it! The quilt consists of 12 blocks, all with a finished size of 16". I used only 6 different fabrics in this quilt not counting the white sashing; 4 floral prints, 2 solids. The fabrics are spaced around the quilt so that it looks random, yet there is still a balance of color. For the borders, I decided to try something different. Usually when I add a border to a quilt, I use a piece at least 4" wide and keep the same border all the way around the quilt top. I pieced together some of the florals for a top and bottom border and used thin strips of solid blue for side borders.

I'm glad I tried this border method! There are many quilts that have borders similar to this but I had never designed and made one of them. I feel like it has opened my mind to new design opportunities. The pieced top and bottom is great for using up scraps! This might be a good way to finish my Scrap Quilt?

For the quilting, I stitched scallops around all the blocks, then quilted leaves and loops inside the blocks. The borders just have simple straight lines of scallop and serpentine stitches. I backed it with a white backing that has a white floral overlay. The binding is a solid white fabric. I used a bright teal blue thread to finish the binding.
