Cutting Instructions

White Fabric
  • 16 - 1 1/2" squares
  • 16 - 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles
  • 8 - 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips
  • 2 - 4 3/8" squares
  • 4 - 2 1/2" squares

Color Fabric
  • 20 - 1 1/2" squares
  • 32 - 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles
  • 4 - 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips
  • 2 - 4 3/8" squares
  • 5 - 2 1/2" squares
Assembly

*Note: Always press to the color fabric unless otherwise noted.

**Note: Half squares triangles (HST) allow plenty of room for trimming. To make HSTs with some trimming space, reduce square size by 1/4". To make HSTs without trimming space, reduce square size by 1/2".

Step 1: Sew together the 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips in sets of 3 to make 4 separate rectangles, 2 white fabric strips and 1 color fabric strip per rectangle. Refer to the next 4 photos.

Step 2: Sew together the 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" strips to make 16 different 3 1/2" squares, 1 white fabric piece and 2 color fabric pieces per square. See the next 4 photos. These squares should measure 3 1/2" so they will have a finished size of 3".

Step 3: Referring to the next 4 photos, make the nine patch blocks. Sew together 5 - 1 1/2" color fabric squares and 4 - 1 1/2" white fabric squares per block to make a total of 4 blocks.

Step 5: Repeat this sewing method to make the center nine patch block from the 5 - 2 1/2" color fabric squares and 4 - 2 1/2" white fabric squares.

Step 6: Make the half square triangles (HST). Use the 4 3/8" squares. Lay a white 4 3/8" square on a color fabric 4 3/8" square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line along the squares, then sew 1/4" from both sides of the line.

Cut along the line, then press open and trim to measure 3 1/2" square.

Repeat this with the remaining pair of 4 3/8" squares to make a total of 4 HSTs.

Step 7: Make the sides of the block. Sew together the 16 - 3 1/2" squares that were made from the 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles. Lay 4 of the squares in a line, then sew them together. Press seams outward. Repeat this with the remaining squares to make 4 separate strips. See the next 4 photos.

Step 8: Make the center of the block. Sew together the large nine patch (made from the 2 1/2" squares), the 6 1/2" long pieces, and the HSTs. Refer to the next 5 photos. Press to the HSTs and the center nine patch.

Step 9: Assemble the block. Sew together the small nine patch blocks (made from the 1 1/2" squares), the strips made from the 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles, and the block center. Press to the outer strips.
